THE ABANDONED PILE

The wrong book, not a bad book.

Most readers keep a small stack of books they stopped forty pages into, and most of those books were fine. What went wrong was timing. A dense, demanding novel handed to someone with nothing left at the end of the day, or something gentle offered to someone who wanted to be gripped. The book takes the blame for what was really a mismatch.

Recommendations tend to make this worse, because they are built from what you have already finished. That describes your taste, which is fairly stable, and says nothing at all about your week, which is not. Starting from your mood is a way of asking the question the abandoned pile was always really about.

PACE AND ATTENTION

Reading asks more of you than watching does.

A film will carry you along whether or not you are fully present. A book will not: the words stop moving the moment you do. That makes your energy a far more practical consideration for reading than for almost anything else, and it is worth being honest about before you choose.

Low energy is not the enemy of reading, but it does change what works. Short chapters, a strong narrative pull, a familiar voice, something you have read before and can fall back into. A restless, higher-energy evening can take the long sentences, the unfamiliar structure, the book you have been meaning to start for two years. Neither state is the better one for reading. They simply want different books.

ABOUT THE SUGGESTIONS

A starting point, not a syllabus.

Suggestions arrive with details and links so you can read about a title before committing to it. Taranify does not sell or host books — availability and purchase are handled by whoever the link points to, and a library card will often get you the same book for nothing.

Nothing is kept between visits. Taranify holds no reading history and does not know what you have already finished, so it will occasionally suggest something you read years ago. Take that as a coincidence rather than a recommendation.

BORROW BEFORE YOU BUY

A suggestion costs nothing to investigate.

Most books can be sampled, and a first chapter is usually enough to tell whether the voice suits the week you are having. Most libraries will lend you the rest for nothing, including as an ebook that arrives in about ninety seconds, which makes the whole exercise close to free.

That matters more for mood-led reading than for other kinds. If you are choosing by how you feel today, some of those choices will not survive to next week, and the cheapest way to be wrong is to be wrong with a borrowed book.

Taranify links out to details for each suggestion and stops there. Where you get the book is entirely up to you, and the answer is often nearer and cheaper than a shop.

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS

About the books quiz.

Read about the approach
How does Taranify help me choose a book?

Choose the colors you feel drawn to right now and answer the follow-up mood questions. Taranify uses those responses to suggest books you might enjoy.

Do I need a reading list or account?

No. You can get suggestions without adding your reading history or creating an account.

Can I read or buy books on Taranify?

Taranify is a discovery tool. Book details may include previews or external links; availability and purchases are handled by the linked provider.

Will it only suggest new releases?

No. Suggestions are drawn from books across a wide range of publication dates, so a result is as likely to be long-established as recently published.

I am in a reading slump. Does this help?

It might, mostly by removing the deciding. Slumps are often less about not wanting to read and more about one specific unfinished book sitting in the way. A suggestion arrived at sideways can be much easier to start than the one you have been avoiding.

Does Taranify know what I have already read?

No. There is no reading history, no account and nothing stored between visits, so the quiz cannot filter out titles you have finished.

Is the quiz free?

Yes. You can take the quiz and get recommendations without creating a Taranify account.

How should I choose a color?

For each pair, choose the color you feel more drawn to at this moment. Go with your first instinct rather than your usual favorite color or the mood you want to have.

Can I get different recommendations?

Use Regenerate to get more suggestions from the same quiz responses. If your mood has changed, start over and choose your colors again.
